Shade is the feature that decides if you use it
The most common regret with an outdoor kitchen here is not the appliances. It is that nobody wants to stand at it. A cooking station in full west-facing sun goes unused from May through September, which is exactly the season it was built for. So we start by working out where the afternoon sun actually lands in your yard, then place the kitchen and the shade around that, rather than putting the island wherever the gas line happens to be closest.
What is under the counter matters just as much. A proper outdoor kitchen has a gas line sized for the burners, a dedicated electrical circuit with weatherproof outlets, and, if there is a sink, supply and drain that can be shut off and drained before a freeze. Southern Utah does get freezing nights, and an outdoor sink plumbed like an indoor one is a burst pipe waiting for January.
Then there is what the desert does to materials. Stainless steel that is not an outdoor grade will rust at the welds. Cheap cabinet boxes swell and delaminate. Dark stone counters get too hot to set a plate on. We specify for full exposure, because everything out here lives in the sun permanently.

Outdoor kitchen FAQs
Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen?
Usually yes, because of the gas and electrical, and for a solid shade structure as well. Simple freestanding grill islands with no utilities sometimes do not. We confirm during the walkthrough and handle permits and inspections as part of the job.
Can I have a sink outside with our winters?
Yes, it just has to be plumbed for it. We run the supply so the line can be isolated and drained ahead of a freeze, and we show you the shutoff at handover. Plumbed like an indoor sink, an outdoor line will eventually split on a cold January night.
What countertop material holds up outdoors here?
Granite and outdoor-rated surfaces do best. Quartz is generally not recommended in full sun because the resin binder can discolor over time. Color matters too: dark stone gets hot enough to be genuinely unpleasant, so we usually steer lighter outdoors.
Where should the outdoor kitchen go?
Somewhere shaded in the late afternoon, close enough to the house that carrying things is not a chore, and downwind of the main seating so smoke does not blow into it. Those three usually decide the location more than where the gas line already is.
Can you build it at the same time as a pool or patio?
That is the ideal way to do it. Running gas, water, and electrical before the deck goes in avoids cutting into finished hardscape later. If a pool or patio is on your list at all, tell us now even if the kitchen comes later.
